The Columbarium at Lord of Life Lutheran Church

A columbarium is a repository for cremated remains, organized into individual niches, with exterior identification of the person(s) inurned. The columbarium is located on the church property near the large cross.  The structure is made of mahogany colored granite and contains 32 niches. Each niche can hold up to two standard cremation urns or a single companion urn.

From ancient to modern times, from the crypts of the cathedrals of Europe to the parish cemeteries of America, the church has always cared for its deceased and kept them close, within earshot of the promises of God.

As cremation has become a more common form of final disposition, families have sought a place of interment besides remote cemeteries.  With that in mind, Lord of Life Lutheran Church has designated a portion of the church grounds to be used and maintained as a columbarium for the inurnment of cremated remains.  A place of beauty, a columbarium provides a quiet place of rest for all the saints enfolded in the daily presence of the living family of God. As we come to Lord of Life for worship, fellowship, baptism, confirmation and marriage, so too will the Lord of Life Columbarium hold a special meaning as we celebrate together the completion of this life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a columbarium?
A columbarium is a repository for cremated remains, organized into individual niches, with exterior identification of the person(s) inurned.

Who constructed the columbarium?
Lenz Monument Company.

Where is it located?
The unit is near the large cross located just outside the lower level main entrance of the church.

What materials were used?
The columbarium is made of mahogany colored granite.  It rests on a concrete surround. A sidewalk connects the lower entrance to the unit.

How many niches are there?
The initial purchase was a 32 niche unit.

How many urns does a niche hold?
Each niche can hold up to two standard cremation urns or a single companion urn.

What if Lord of Life needs more than 32 niches?
Additional units can be purchased in the future.

What if Lord of Life changes locations?
The columbarium would be transportable to a new church location or a cemetery.

What about upkeep?
The price of niches contributes to a fund to cover maintenance needs.

What is the cost for a niche?
The cost per niche is $1,500.00. This price does not include the cost of the initial engraving (currently $150.00), the cost to add future dates of death (currently $65.00) per individual entry, any funeral home services or urns. These costs will be the responsibility of the family/next of kin at the time of need. There is no cost to open or close the niche at the time of need.

How does that compare to traditional burial plots or niches at local cemeteries?
Conservatively, the cost for a traditional burial plot for one casket is approximately $1,000.  Memorial stones can run from $250-$1,800, depending on materials. Cemeteries charge approximately $900 to open and close the plot.  The cost of a niche is between $1,800 to $2,200 depending on the size of the niche. Typically, there is a $150 charge to open and close the niche.

How do I purchase a niche?
A form is available from the church office.

Who should I contact if I have more questions?
